A chimney without a sound flue liner is a chimney that’s leaking combustion gas (and possibly carbon monoxide) into wall cavities — and the only fix is installing or replacing the liner. Prime Chimney Experts handles this work across the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex following NFPA 211 standards. Free inspection, written quote, no surprise fees.

What’s actually involved

The flue liner is the inner channel that carries combustion gas safely from the firebox up and out of the chimney. The three liner types: clay tile (original construction in most pre-1990 chimneys), pumped-in cast-in-place (less common), and stainless steel (the modern standard for new installs and replacements).

Liners fail from age, fire damage, freeze-thaw splitting clay tiles, mortar deterioration between tile sections, and acid-gas corrosion (especially common with high-efficiency gas appliances that produce condensate).

Once a liner has failed, the flue gas can escape into the chimney structure or surrounding wall cavities, creating fire and carbon-monoxide hazards. The repair is a stainless steel liner pulled down through the existing flue.

We install UL-1777 listed stainless steel liners — different alloys for wood (304-grade) versus gas (316-grade for resistance to acidic condensate) — sized to the appliance and flue.

Why this matters in DFW specifically

DFW’s mid-century housing stock (homes built 1950-1985) has clay tile liners that are now 40-75 years old. Many show cracking, separation, or missing mortar between tiles — issues invisible from the firebox but obvious on a Level 2 video scan. The same generation of homes is also where high-efficiency gas furnaces have been retrofitted into existing chimneys without proper liner upgrade, leading to acid corrosion of the original liner. Both situations need stainless replacement.

Our process

  1. Level 2 video inspection — We confirm liner condition, dimension, and confirm the appliance the liner needs to serve.
  2. Liner sizing and selection — Liner diameter sized to appliance per manufacturer specs. Alloy chosen for fuel type. Insulation wrap added where required.
  3. Top-down installation — Liner is lowered from the top of the chimney through the existing flue, fitted to the appliance connection, sealed with appropriate joint material, and topped with a stainless cap.
  4. Final inspection and certification — Connection inspected for proper draft, joints checked for tightness. Certification documentation for insurance and resale records.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a liner if my old one is intact?

If a Level 2 inspection">Level 2 inspection shows the existing liner is sound, no immediate replacement. Replacement is recommended when the existing liner is cracked, gapped, corroded, or undersized for a new appliance.

Will a new liner improve performance?

Often yes — particularly for wood stoves or high-efficiency gas appliances that need a specific flue diameter to draft properly. An oversized flue causes condensation and creosote; an undersized flue starves the appliance of draft.

How long does installation take?

Most installations are a single 4-8 hour visit. Complex routings or multi-flue installs may extend to two days.

What’s the warranty on a stainless liner?

Lifetime materials warranty from manufacturers (most major brands). Workmanship warranty 10 years from us.

Will a liner damage the existing chimney?

No — if installed correctly. The liner pulls down through the flue without altering the masonry. Insulation wrap, if used, may slightly enlarge the flue dimension but is sized to fit the existing space.
