Level 2 inspection">Level 2 inspection is the deeper diagnostic — required by NFPA 211 after a chimney fire, weather event, change of fuel, or before sale of a property. It includes everything in Level 1 plus a video scan of the flue interior. Prime Chimney Experts handles this work across the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex following NFPA 211 standards. Free inspection, written quote, no surprise fees.

What’s actually involved

Level 2 inspection covers everything in Level 1 plus inspection of accessible portions in the attic, basement, and crawl spaces, and — most importantly — a video scan of the flue interior using a chimney camera.

It’s required by NFPA 211 in five situations: after any chimney fire (even a minor one), after a weather event that may have damaged the chimney (severe storm, hail, lightning, fallen tree), when the fuel type or appliance is changed, before a property sale, and when an external event indicates possible internal damage.

The video scan is the part that catches what Level 1 cannot: cracked flue tiles, missing mortar between tiles, gaps that allow combustion gas into wall cavities, hidden creosote deposits, and any obstructions invisible from the firebox.

Every Level 2 inspection results in a comprehensive written report with photos, video clips of the flue interior, findings, and a clear list of any required repairs.

Why this matters in DFW specifically

After a major DFW hailstorm or wind event, Level 2 inspection is the right call even if the chimney looks fine from the ground. We routinely find cracked flue tiles after storms that left no visible exterior damage — the impact transferred through the structure and split the tile inside the flue. Burning a fire in a cracked flue lets combustion gas reach the wood framing, which is how chimney-related house fires start.

Our process

  1. Level 1 visual sweep — Same as Level 1 — exterior, firebox, all readily accessible portions photographed and documented.
  2. Attic and crawl-space inspection — Wherever the chimney passes through the attic or basement, we inspect the framing-to-chimney clearance, signs of water entry, and any structural concerns.
  3. Video flue scan — A camera on a flexible rod is sent up the flue from the firebox; we record video of the entire flue interior, smoke chamber, and damper area.
  4. Comprehensive written report — Photos, video clips, findings. Includes any required Level 3 referral if we find conditions that need partial demolition to diagnose fully.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a Level 2 take?

90-150 minutes typically. The video scan portion alone is 30-45 minutes; the rest is exterior, firebox, and attic/crawl-space inspection.

My insurance is asking for Level 2 — why?

After a covered weather event your insurer wants documentation of any chimney damage (or absence of it) before approving the claim. Level 2 provides that documentation in a format adjusters accept.

Do I need Level 2 every year?

No — Level 1 is the annual standard. Level 2 is for specific triggering events (fire, weather, change of use, sale, suspected damage).

What if you find damage during Level 2?

We document it in the report with video clips. You receive a written quote for any required repairs. We don’t pressure to schedule the repair on the spot — take the quote, get other opinions, decide on your timeline.

Can a Level 2 be done remotely?

No. The video scan and physical inspection require on-site access. Beware any service offering Level 2 remotely; that’s not a real Level 2.
