Prime Chimney Experts — DFW chimney & fireplace specialists. Free inspection, written quote, no surprise fees.
A Level 1 chimney inspection is the annual baseline — a visual check of all readily accessible portions of the chimney, performed before every sweep and required by NFPA 211 for any chimney in continued use under existing conditions. Prime Chimney Experts handles this work across the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex following NFPA 211 standards. Free inspection, written quote, no surprise fees.
What’s actually involved
Level 1 inspection is the standard annual inspection required by NFPA 211 for any chimney that hasn’t changed in use, fuel type, or appliance. It covers the readily accessible portions of the chimney — exterior, interior firebox, accessible flue, and any portions visible without special tools.
What we look for: combustible deposits (creosote, soot), structural condition (cracks, spalling, missing mortar), proper clearances to combustibles, damper condition, and obvious obstructions or blockages.
What we don’t do at Level 1: video scan inside the flue (that’s Level 2), and we don’t open up walls or remove fixtures (that’s Level 3). If we see something that requires Level 2 or 3 to diagnose properly, we recommend it before continuing.
Every Level 1 inspection results in a written report with photographs, a clear pass/fail assessment, and a list of any recommendations for repair or further inspection.
Why this matters in DFW specifically
DFW homeowners often skip annual inspections because Texas winters don’t feel cold enough to require frequent fireplace use. But the chimney structure is exposed to freeze-thaw, hailstorms, and clay-soil-driven foundation movement year-round. Annual Level 1 inspection catches the early-warning signs (mortar joint erosion, crown cracks, flashing failures) while they’re still affordable repairs.
Our process
- Exterior inspection — We walk the perimeter, photographing the chimney exterior from the ground and (if accessible) from the roof — crown condition, brick spalling, mortar joints, flashing.
- Firebox inspection — Visual check of the firebox interior — refractory cracks, damper operation, any visible damage to the smoke chamber from below.
- Flue inspection (visual only at Level 1) — Flashlight inspection of the flue from the firebox up. If we cannot see the full flue or if conditions look concerning, we recommend Level 2.
- Written report — Photos, findings, recommendations. Includes a clear next-action: pass, conditional pass with monitoring, or repair-required.

Frequently asked questions
Is Level 1 enough for my real estate transaction?
For most resale transactions yes — but if the chimney has visible damage, has been unused for years, or the buyer’s lender requires more thorough documentation, you may need Level 2.
How often is Level 1 required?
NFPA 211 specifies annually under existing conditions. CSIA recommends the same.
Can I do this myself?
You can look at your chimney and notice obvious problems, but the NFPA 211 inspection requires a qualified technician trained in chimney systems. Insurance and resale typically require professional documentation.
What’s the difference between Level 1 and Level 2?
Level 1 is visual-only of accessible portions. Level 2 adds a video scan inside the flue plus inspection of accessible attic and crawl-space portions of the chimney. Level 2 is required after a chimney fire, after weather damage, or before a sale.
Will you sell me extras during the inspection?
No. We document what we find and provide a written quote for any recommended work. You decide what to do with that information; we don’t pressure-sell.
