Modern gas appliances — furnaces, water heaters, gas fireplaces — need properly sized and installed venting to operate safely and efficiently. We install B-vent and direct-vent systems across DFW. Prime Chimney Experts handles this work across the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex following NFPA 211 standards. Free inspection, written quote, no surprise fees.

What’s actually involved

Chimney venting is the system that carries combustion exhaust from a gas appliance (furnace, water heater, gas fireplace) safely out of the house. Three main types: B-vent (double-wall metal pipe for atmospheric vent appliances), direct vent (sealed coaxial pipe drawing combustion air from outside), and Type L vent (oil-burning appliances).

Improper venting is one of the most common — and most dangerous — issues we find on DFW homes. Symptoms include backdraft (combustion gas spilling into the home), incomplete combustion, soot buildup, and in worst cases carbon monoxide accumulation.

We install venting for new appliance installations, replace failing or undersized vent systems, and convert atmospheric venting to direct-vent when the original appliance is replaced with a high-efficiency model.

Every venting install is sized to the appliance manufacturer’s specifications and inspected for proper draft after installation. We provide written certification documentation.

Why this matters in DFW specifically

DFW’s housing stock includes a lot of homes where the original gas furnace (1985-2000 era) was replaced with a modern high-efficiency unit but the venting was not updated. The result is venting that’s now oversized for the new appliance — which causes condensation in the flue, acid corrosion of the venting and the chimney liner, and reduced appliance efficiency. We see this scenario weekly. The fix is downsizing the vent (often with a stainless liner) to match the new appliance.

Our process

  1. Appliance and vent assessment — We inspect the existing appliance, current vent system, and confirm what’s required by the manufacturer specifications.
  2. Sizing and design — Vent sized per appliance specs and venting code. We document the design before any work begins.
  3. Installation — New vent installed per manufacturer requirements; old vent removed; all penetrations sealed; appliance connection inspected.
  4. Draft and combustion testing — Combustion analyzer used to verify the appliance is drafting correctly and not producing CO. Written certification provided.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know my vent needs work?

Soot around the appliance vent connection, condensation visible on the vent or the appliance, backdraft when the appliance fires (you smell exhaust in the house), or CO detectors going off without obvious cause.

Can I vent multiple appliances into one chimney?

Sometimes — depends on the appliances and the chimney. A common-vent install requires careful sizing to prevent backdraft. We design these per code; not every situation supports common venting.

Will a new vent improve appliance efficiency?

If the old vent was undersized or the wrong type, yes — sometimes significantly. Modern high-efficiency appliances need direct-vent for full efficiency rating.

Is direct-vent worth the cost over B-vent?

Direct-vent is sealed-combustion (no makeup air drawn from inside the house) and doesn’t require a chimney chase. For new installs in tight homes, direct-vent is usually preferred.

How long does vent installation take?

B-vent: typically a single 4-6 hour visit. Direct-vent for a gas fireplace: 4-8 hours including penetration through exterior wall. Vent replacement with liner: 6-12 hours typically.
